About The Jockey
Hot Springs, Arkansas, has a rich history of horse racing, and jockeys have played a central role in its development. Racing in the area dates back to the late 19th century, when the first organized races were held at Essex Park in 1904. However, the opening of Oaklawn Park in 1905, one of the premier racetracks in the United States, solidified Hot Springs as a hub for thoroughbred racing.
Jockeys flocked to Oaklawn for its competitive racing and substantial purses. The track’s annual Arkansas Derby, which began in 1936, quickly became a stepping stone for jockeys hoping to showcase their skills on a national level. Jockeys like Pat Day and Calvin Borel, both of whom had long associations with Oaklawn, became legends not only in Hot Springs but also in the broader horse racing world. These riders interacted closely with local trainers and horse owners, contributing to the tight-knit racing community that Hot Springs became known for.
